Do your remember eating at Seabouy Fish and Chips?
When I think of my years spent growing up in Sault Ste. Marie so many memories relate to food. One of my favourite greasy food fixes was Seabouy Fish and Chips on Bruce Street just at the bottom of the hill.
In the late 70s and early 80s when I frequented Seabouy’s it was located on the east side of the street in an older building with wooden floors that looked like it had been once converted from a stable or something. At the time I had a paper route delivering the Sault Star and on Friday’s when I had a few dollars I would stop on my way home and buy some fish and chips to go. Standing in the store smelling the aroma of the fish and chips freshly battered as it was dunked in the deep fryers was enough to make my mouth water. Not necessarily the healthiest food on the planet, but if you are going to have fish and chips done right there’s no half measures.
In the early 1980s Seabouy decided to go a little upscale moving down the street into the vacated Aurora’s Pizza building (see related story on Aurora’s here) at the corner of Bruce and Grosvenor where they seemed to struggle for several years before finally going under. (Or at least I think they finally folded). Whether it was the lack of traffic or the loss of ambiance that sealed its fate as a popular fish and chip place, it is sadly missed.
I currently live in Toronto and while you can feast on take-out from countries around the world there is a real shortage of neighbourhood fish and chips places. Perhaps its just people trying to eat healthier, or perhaps there are a lot less Catholics eating fish on Friday, whatever the reason the corner fish and chip place has definitely vanished in recent years.
